Hands-on Activity

Cause and Effect on the Land

Fun Forces
Students will examine how the Earth's land surface is affected by water in its different forms. They will describe how structures such as dams help to protect the Earth's surface. They will compare how dams made of different materials can vary in their function and effectiveness.
Topic: Earth's Materials and System
Real World Science Topics:
  • An evaluation of Earth's surface and how water affects it
  • A comparison of man-made structures and their ability to protect and/or alter the Earth's surface
After completing this activity, students will be able to describe the characteristics of Earth's surface. They will be able to identify water sources on Earth and list how water affects Earth's land surface. They will be able to describe how dams designed from different materials can be more or less effective.

Activity Difficulty Rating: 2 Each hands-on science activity has been ranked based on difficulty of set up and how difficult they are to perform. The rating scale is from 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most complicated.
